Welcome the new EASY Softshell Pants pattern

And here are the new EASY softshell pants for children. Or rather, the pattern for these super simple pants for beginners. It took me a little longer to release this pattern, mainly because I felt there was no need for another pants sewing pattern, but in the end, I made the pants myself, just the way I wanted them.

I present to you the new EASY softshell pants pattern for absolute beginners.

In the photos, you can see the softshell pants in the largest size 134. The model is approximately 138 cm tall. The pattern still fits her well, and the pants are just right. Here I used spring softshell with a membrane in navy blue. This softshell is great for spring, summer (when it's rainy and you want to go out), or autumn.

I designed the softshell pants pattern to be easy for absolute beginners to use. It has no pockets, no cut-outs, no special features that would make it difficult for beginner sewers to complete the project. So if you're looking for a beginner-friendly pattern, you've found it, and you can get started.

We have launched the pattern for sale on the website in these versions:

What does the pattern look like in smaller sizes?

Here the pattern is worn by our youngest, 3-year-old. Size 92. Height 90 cm. The pattern fits her, it's a bit looser. Which is what we want, because I often put warm tights under the pants if it gets very cold.

Here I again used patterned membrane softshell. This is a lightweight version of the material without insulation. This allows them to be worn in bad weather anytime; I just put tights underneath when it's cold.

Main features of the EASY pattern:

  1. Simplicity and speed of sewing: The pattern is designed to be suitable even for beginners. A clear sewing guide will lead you through each step, so you can sew perfect pants in no time. You can find the sewing instructions here.

  2. Universal design: The pants have a comfortable loose fit that allows children to move freely during any activity. They are suitable for autumn, winter, and spring.

  3. Functional softshell: Softshell is an ideal material for children's clothing – it is durable, waterproof, and breathable. EASY pants are an excellent choice for changeable weather.

  4. Size range: The pattern offers a wide range of sizes to meet the needs of children of various ages.

  5. Customization options: It's up to your imagination what colors and accessories you choose. The pants can be plain, patterned, or with reflective elements for added safety.

Cuffs

Cuffs on the legs are great if you want to tuck them into rain boots, for example. I often do this. In this case, it's an easy finish for the pants and doesn't require special tailoring knowledge. If the legs are still too long for you, but you don't want to shorten the pattern, it's ideal to sew a hidden cuff. The cuffs on this pattern are longer and snugly fit around the ankle. Thanks to these cuffs, you can extend the wear for perhaps one more season.

High waistband made of cuff fabric

A high waistband on softshell pants is already standard. It's especially useful for small children who still have "baby bellies" and you don't want to "constrict" them too much with elastic. However, for older children, I would recommend a firmer cuff or one that doesn't stretch out easily. Alternatively, you can insert an additional elastic band into the waistband cuff. This will prevent the waistband from stretching out over time and keep the pants in place.

Personally, I absolutely hate it when cuffs loosen. I prefer firmer ribbed cuffs that don't loosen on their own, or I add elastic.

Recommended fabrics

Fabrics that will work with this pattern. Here I will recommend fabrics from which to sew the EASY pants. These are simple pants designed for sewing with sturdy fabrics, so you can't go wrong by choosing non-stretch fabrics.

  • Spring softshell with membrane
  • Winter softshell with fleece
  • Winter softshell with lamb lining
  • Brushed sweatshirt fabric
  • Unbrushed sweatshirt fabric
  • Fleece
  • Cupro
  • Trouser fabric
  • Corduroy

Fabric consumption for pants

This table shows how many cm of a given fabric you need to have in your cart to sew the pants. For example, if you are sewing size 35 cm, 35 cm of softshell fabric will be enough. However, it's good to consider some of your own modifications and perhaps also that the fabric may not have the required width or you may not be able to place the pattern directionally and must respect the print. In such cases, consumption may increase.

  • 62 - 35 cm
  • 68 - 40 cm
  • 74 - 45 cm
  • 80 - 50 cm
  • 86 - 50 cm
  • 92 - 55 cm
  • 98 - 60 cm
  • 104 - 65 cm
  • 110 - 70 cm
  • 116 - 75 cm
  • 122 - 75 cm
  • 128 - 80 cm
  • 134 - 85 cm

Photos from pattern testers

The pattern was tested for you by my pattern testers. Thanks to them, I can individually adjust the pattern and assess how it fits the general population. Sometimes the girls choose a size larger or don't strictly follow the size charts. But that's perfectly fine, because I expect that will happen with you too. That's why it's important for me to find out how the pattern behaves when you simply choose a size by eye and according to the current items you have at home.
